Access for external users

Research capabilities showcased on this website are open to commercial and other higher education users, as well as members of the University of Cambridge.

How to gain transactional* access to University of Cambridge shared research equipment.

  • Make contact with the selected facility using the contact details provided on the departmental web pages (links via this website). 
  • Ascertain feasibility for the proposed work at that facility and agree specifics. NDAs are available on request.
  • For transactional access to shared equipment, either in-person or as a service, a legal agreement (Equipment Access Agreement, EAA) must be in place between external parties and the University of Cambridge before access can be granted. Currently, this agreement will be between the facility provider department and the recipient organisation. We will shortly be launching an EAA between multiple provider departments and the recipient organisation.
  • Ascertain whether your organisation has a valid EAA in place to cover the proposed work in the selected facility. If not, liaise with the relevant facility contact to generate an Equipment Access Agreement Letter (EAAL). Please note that additional agreements may be required depending on the nature of your request.**
  • Once a valid EAAL is in place, liaise with the relevant facility contact to generate a contract for the proposed work (Equipment Access Agreement Schedule, EAAS). The EAAS can be for a service-level provision, or for physical access to the specified equipment.
  • If representatives of the recipient organisation need physical access to the equipment specified within an EAAS, each person must enter into an Individual Access Agreement (IAA) with the department(s) specified in the EAAS prior to accessing the selected facility/facilities. The relevant facility contact will liaise with the recipient organisation’s representative(s) to generate IAAs.

* Transactional access refers to arrangements where the University provider gives access to equipment and training, and the recipient owns intellectual property (IP).

Royce Equipment

For accessing Royce equipment; external students, post-doc researchers and academics from outside of the University of Cambridge are invited to apply for funding for short projects.
