About us

The Wolfson Electron Microscopy Suite (WEMS) is a user facility dedicated to scanning and transmission electron microscopy, enabling research across a wide range of materials systems.

WEMS provides advanced instrumentation that delivers spatially resolved information on atomic structure, crystallography, microstructure and defects, as well as chemical composition, strain, and functional properties, down to atomic resolution.

The facility hosts SEM, (S)TEM and FIB-SEM instruments, together with specialised specimen holders and equipment for advanced materials characterisation.

Located in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, in a building partly funded by the Wolfson Foundation, WEMS supports research across the University and welcomes academic and industrial users.

The Henry Royce Institute for advanced materials at the University of Cambridge

This facility includes equipment funded by Royce. Royce was formed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to support advanced materials research through the provision of state-of-the-art equipment, and by facilitating industry–academia interactions to achieve technology translation. Royce at Cambridge offers funding opportunities for students, researchers and SMEs to access their equipment.
